The Artist: Blackthorn
Blackthorn combines apparent opposites: dense dark branches armed with formidable thorns, followed by masses of delicate white blossom, often before its leaves appear. Later come the dark sloes. Hardy and resilient, it has long formed protective boundaries in the landscape.
THE ART
Blackthorn's wood can contrast pale outer wood with considerably darker brown heartwood. Because the branches are relatively small and often irregular, individual pieces can reveal striking transitions, unexpected markings and considerable character.
