The Artist: Elm
Elm once dominated parts of the British landscape before Dutch elm disease devastated mature populations from the 1960s onwards. Yet Elm has not disappeared. Young trees continue to grow and regenerate. Its wood is equally distinctive: tough, strong and famously difficult to split because of its interlocking grain.
THE ART
That complicated grain is part of Elm's beauty. Instead of running obediently in one direction, fibres twist and interlock, producing swirling lines, irregular patterns and considerable visual movement. Every small section can reveal something unexpected.
