The Artist: Sycamore
Sycamore is not native to Britain, but it has been part of the landscape for centuries. Vigorous, fast-growing and tolerant of exposed conditions, it can become a substantial tree. Its pale, workable wood has also been valued for carving and was traditionally used for objects including Welsh love spoons.
THE ART
Sycamore is usually pale cream with a fine, even texture, but particular pieces can reveal rippling grain, darker markings and subtle changes in tone. Its light background makes these small variations especially visible.
