The Artist: Willow
Willow belongs beside water. Its flexible stems and flowing form have made it both visually distinctive and immensely useful, particularly for basketry and woven work. Willow also has a remarkable medicinal history: compounds found in its bark helped lead eventually to the development of aspirin.
THE ART
Willow wood is generally light and relatively soft, with gentle grain and subdued colouring. Its beauty tends to be quiet — soft lines, delicate tonal changes and occasional markings that echo the understated character of the tree itself.
